Saying grace or a prayer before meals is a simple and meaningful way to thank God for His provision and the sustenance it provides. Scripture also teaches us about the importance of saying grace before meals, as seen in Matthew 14:13 when Jesus blessed the loaves and fish before feeding the crowd of 5000. The simple act of saying grace allows us to be righteous, humble and intentional.

A prayer before meals is a simple way for Christians to thank God for the food, recognize His provision, and invite His presence into everyday moments: God, thank You for this food and for providing for us today. Bless this meal and the hands that prepared it, and help us stay grateful. Amen. A short prayer can also be: Thank You, Lord, for this meal and Your provision. Amen. This prayer can be said quietly, whether you’re eating alone, with family, or on special occasions.

Why Should We Pray Before Meals?

It’s very easy to get stuck in the chaos or fast-pace of our daily lives, and to forget to do simple acts such as saying grace before meals. Yet, the minute you take to pause and  say grace before your meals can benefit you in many ways:

  • Praying before meals reminds us that it is God’s providence and genorosity that enables all that is good and bountiful in life. It humbly reminds us that it is He who provides, not our hands.
  • Allows us to slow down and appreciate the hands that prepared the meal, the food that we’re about to eat, and the company that we share it with.
  • Even though its a small and simple act, it encourages a deeper conection with God by reinforcing our faith and allowing for a daily conversation with Him.
  • Reinforces humility, gratitude, faith and connection.

Prayer before Eating Alone

Heavenly  Father

Thank you for this food that I am about to eat. Thank you for blessing this food and my body with your generous bounty. I pray that you continue to guide me in the rightful path towards You. I’m grateful that I am able to give thanks in all circumstances, despite my solitude. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

  • Notice the absence of “We” in this prayer. It is written for one person, allowing someone alone to still say grace and express gratitude for the meal before them.
  • The prayer acknowledges that even in solitude, there is still much to be thankful for, as reflected in Thessalonians 5:18
  • Sharing a meal with others is a privilege, but even when that privilege is absent, the person actively chooses to be thankful for God’s blessings, guidance, and presence in their lives.

Praying Before Meals With Friends:

Dear Lord,

 We thank You for the meal before us, for the friends and family gathered around this table, and for the joy of sharing this food.  As it says in Acts of the Apostles, “They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts.” May we gather around this table today with that same sincerity and joy. Bless this meal, our friendships, and bless our friends. We are thankful for your daily providence, bounty, guidance, and love that You bestow upon us every day. In the name of our Heavenly Father, Amen.

  • Inspired by the Acts of the Apostles, this prayer reflects upon feelings of joy, sincerity, and gratitude for the ability to be able to share a meal with loved ones.
  • Gathering together and sharing a meal invoked shared gratitude for the meal, the company and God’s gifts.

Praying Before Meals When You’ve Had a Difficult Day

Heavenly Father,

As we gather around this table tonight, we take a moment to reflect on the day we had and to remember the trials we’ve faced. Thank You for guiding us through the difficult moments and ensuring that we stay on the righteous path.

Lord, as we reflect upon the day before our evening meal, quieten our hearts and racing thoughts, and fill us with Your Peace.  Renew us with strength to be able to overcome the trials of tomorrow, with You by our side.

Bless this food, the hands that prepared it, and the sustenance it provides. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

  • We all have hard days, and expressing gratitude may seem like the last thing we want to do after a day where nothing has gone right.
  • Taking a minute to say grace and to express gratitude, whilst acknowledging the trials and frustrations of the day, may be more cathartic than you realise.
  • There are several prayers for healing that can be incorporated into your mealtime grace, especially if you are seeking comfort in God or emotional healing after a difficult day.
  • This prayer asks God for peace, strength, and guidance so that we may face the worries of tomorrow with the comfort of His presence.

Prayer at a Special Gathering

Dear Lord

We gather here today in celebration and gratitude. We are thankful for You bringing us all together to share this joyous occasion.
Thank you for blessing this glorious meal and the company we share it with today.

As we share this special occasion, may Your presence fill us with joy, gratitude, good conversation, and renewed faith.

In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.

  • Prayers for special occasions remind us to  be grateful for God in every moment of life, as written in Ephesians 6:18,  “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests.”
  •  Joyful occasions or special gatherings allow us to connect, be grateful for our blessings and for God’s continuing presence in our lives through the power of prayer.

Simple Catholic Prayer Before Meals

Our Father, who art in heaven,

hallowed be Thy name;

Thy kingdom come;

thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses

as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from evil. Amen.

  • The Lord’s prayer is the quintessential prayer taught and chanted amongst Christians. Also known as “our Father”, it is the prayer Jesus taught his disciples when asked how they should pray.
  • For Catholics, “our daily bread” symbolizes both God’s daily bounty and the Holy Eucharist (which is the “source of summit” for Catholics).
  • The Lord’s prayer teaches us to honor God, ask for our daily provision, protect us from temptation and guide us on the rightful path.

Take a minute out of your day to say grace before meals.

Paul teaches us that “whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God,” reminding us that even ordinary moments, such as mealtimes, can be used to honour God. In our efforts to be righteous, we should follow our Saviour, Jesus Christ, who made it a habit to give thanks to God before breaking bread. Praying before meals reminds us to take a moment to express gratitude and acknowledge God as the source of our daily provision, and blessings, as well as our continued source of guidance.

Saying grace before meals does not need to be perfect or elaborate; a simple and sincere expression of gratitude to God is more than enough. Writing our daily prayers, reflections, and moments of gratitude in a prayer journal can help turn short mealtime graces into daily prayers full of intention and resolve. Being consistent helps us turn saying grace before meals into a daily habit, one which we can follow to measure our growth and strengthen our intentions.

“Bless us, O Lord, and these Thy gifts which we are about to receive, through Thy bounty through Christ our Lord we pray. Amen.”
