Prayers for Surgery and Healing

Surgery can be a scary thing, whether you’re the one facing the procedure or even if you’re a friend or family member anxiously waiting on the side. It’s normal for everyone involved to feel scared, anxious, confused, or overwhelmed. In these stressful moments, emotions and tensions run high, and finding the right words may seem impossible. That’s why prayer is so important in these situations. Whether you’re the patient or just a supportive friend, prayer offers us all the chance to voice our fears and doubts, and ask for God’s guidance. 

These prayers are for every person in that hospital, the one going into surgery, the one waiting outside, and the one recovering after. They ask God for steady hands for the surgical team, peace for the patient, comfort for the family, and full healing when it is over.

A Prayer Before Surgery for Healing and Peace  

Lord, I am scared, and I will not pretend otherwise. But I trust that you are in this room with me, guiding every hand that touches me today. Calm my fear, steady the surgeon, and bring me through this whole. Whatever happens, let me feel your presence through every moment of it. Amen.

Prayer for the night before surgery

The night before surgery can be the scariest, doubts and fears about the surgery, recovery, and what comes after plague our minds. You might be struggling to sleep or quieten the thoughts running through your mind. Praying can help you place your fears in God’s hands, and blissfully surrdender to him so that you may get a restful night before surgery. 

Dear Lord

I feel scared tonight. My friend is going to have surgery tonight.
I worry about the surgery, if they will recover quickly enough, and if they will be in pain.
I can’t seem to sleep because I’m so worried.
Please help me calm my thoughts and get a restful night’s sleep so I can support my friend tomorrow.
Amen.

Psalm 4:8 “In peace I will lie down and sleep, for you alone, Lord, make me dwell in safety.” 

Dear God

I’m scared and worried about my friend’s surgery.
I bring to you all the fears and worries I have about my friend’s surgery tomorrow.
Help me release my anxiety into Your hands, because I know only You can take away this feeling.
Help me feel less scared so that I can support my friend. In Jesus’s name, we pray.
Amen.

Prayers for the morning of surgery

This is the moment, you’re just minutes or hours away from the procedure. Your friend’s worries and fears seem even more real now, and they might start to experience physical symptoms such as sweaty palms, a racing heart, or shaky hands. However, even in these moments, it’s best to remember that God will look after your friend. 

“Oh Lord,

We surrender ourselves to you and ask for your help.
While we cannot guide (patient) any further, you’ll be going into surgery with them today. You are the Creator.

Please grant (patient) a successful surgery so that they may make a full recovery.
Let us remember your words in Isaiah 41:10: “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed.”
In your son Lord Jesus Christ’s name,
Amen.”

Dear Lord,

My friend is about to walk into the operating room. I know they are scared. Please let them feel no fear, and let them have a successful surgery.
I know that You will be with us both today, so we will have no fear or anxiety.

Prayers for the waiting room

Your friend is finally in the operating theatre, which means youre in the waiting room. There’s nothing left to do but wait. You find yourself worrying about whether they’ll have complications or if they’ll make it. Waiting seems to make the anxiety worse. The best thing to do is to take a deep breath, remember that God is with you and your friend, and surrender to His will. 

Dear Lord

Please accept my fears and worries into your hands as I wait for my friend’s surgery to be over.
Please ease my anxieties, and remind me that You are with them in the operating room, and with me here in this waiting room.

Remind me of your goodness and bring me peace with whatever the outcome may be.
May healing come through your will and not mine. Amen.

Dear Heavenly Father

My dear friend is in surgery right now. Please stay with them and watch over them, as you do all Your faithful creations. Please let them feel Your love and bring them through this surgery. I know that you will look after my friend when I am unable to.

Prayers for the Surgeon and the Medical Team

In our worries and concerns about our friend’s wellbeing, we can easily overlook the surgeon, the anesthesiologist, the scrub nurses and all the other staff members who work so hard to make sure that the patient has the safest possible surgery.  They do such important and life-saving work, that we need to ask God to guide their hearts and minds and steady their hands so that they can do their best work.

Dear Heavenly Father

Please watch over my friend’s surgery today.
Please guide the surgeons and the rest of the medical team with steady hands, sound minds, and boundless patience for them to safely see through my friend’s surgery.
Please ensure that they may not falter.
I know You will be with them, and bless them with skill and compassion so that they will succeed.

Dear Father In Heaven

Please watch over my friend’s surgery; it is a very complicated and life-saving procedure.
I know that You will watch over my friend.
But please also watch over the surgeons who will be performing the surgery. They will be working tirelessly for many hours.
As your word says,  please give strength to the weary and sustain the surgeons throughout this long operation so that they may heal my friend through Your will.

Prayers for Recovery after Surgery

Now that the surgery is over, the hardest part can be the recovery. Recovery can be long, painful and tiresome. We need patience, strength, renewed faith and optimism to see through recovery. Asking God for guidance in these moments is encouraged and will often bring about clarity.

Dear God

I know my friend has a long journey ahead, and he might face complications after his surgery.
Please grant him patience for when recovery feels slow and painful, and he is discouraged.
Let him trust in Your plan, and believe that good things will come to him in time as Your will allows.

Dear Heavenly Father

Please watch over my friend after her surgery and ensure that she suffers no complications.
May it be Your will that she has a smooth recovery.
Help her recover without issues so she may go home.
Let her gain strength and face the painful days ahead with hope and bravery.
I trust that You will guide her safely.

Short Prayers for When You Need Words Right Now

Sometimes you might not have the energy, time or even will to send your friend a long prayer, and that’s okay. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, a short and simple prayer can still let your friend know that you’re thinking of them and wishing them well with their recovery. These short prayers are for the moments when you need to send words of encouragement or hope to a friend who is going into surgery or in recovery.

I place this situation in Your hands. Please ease their fears and quieten their thoughts before they go into surgery. Amen

Guide the surgeons with steady hands, compassion and sound minds so that they can heal my friend, through Your will. Amen

Kindly strengthen my weary friend so that they can recover without complications and go home. Amen. 

Father in Heaven,
May it be Your will that my friend has a successful surgery today. That I am granted reprieve from my anxiety in the waiting room. We pray for a successful outcome. Amen.

Heavenly Father,
I want to support my friend during their time of need. Grant me the strength and patience to tend to their needs during their surgery. Amen.

Your are the God that heals. I place into your hands my friend’s ailing health, and ask that You guide them back to health. Amen.

Catholic Prayers for Surgery and Healing

During surgery and recovery, many Catholics find comfort in catholic prayers and traditions such as anointing of the sick and receving the Eucharist. Catholics might pray to saints, the Blessed Virgin Mary, or our Lord Jesus Christ. 

1.Prayer to St. Luke, Patron of Physicians

This is a prayer for the doctors, nurses and medical time so that they may heal with wisdom, compassion and steady hands. 

St. Luke, beloved physician, you were a companion of St. Paul and the recorder of Christ’s healing ministry. Intercede for the doctors, nurses, and caregivers attending to (Insert name of friend). Guide their hands and judgment, that they may accurately diagnose and successfully treat this illness. Amen.

2.Healing Power of Padre Pio

Padre Pio’s healing prayer to God, asking Jesus Christ to bring physical, emotional, and spiritual healing, and to grant peace, comfort, and trust in God’s will.

Heavenly Father, I thank you for loving me. I thank you for sending your Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, to the world to save and to set me free. I trust in your power and grace that sustain and restore me.

Loving Father, touch me now with your healing hands, for I believe that your will is for me to be well in mind, body, soul and spirit. Cover me with the most precious blood of your Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ from the top of my head to the soles of my feet.

A classic prayer to Mother Mary for when you feel everything is too much, 

Hail, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, our life, our sweetness and our hope. To you do we cry, poor banished children of Eve; to you do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. 5. The Lord’s Prayer

A foundational prayer from the bible giving up our will to God, and accepting that he is the Creator, Provider, and everything happens because of His will.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. 

When You Are Too Scared to Find Any Words

Sometimes our fear and anxiety can feel like they’re drowning us. The worries mount up, the surgery is approaching, the waiting seems endless, and the recovery is met with complications. Our fears can consume us and leave us unable to form a coherent thought or sentence. For when were too scared, remember to just take a breath, remind yourself that you’re not alone and cast your fears aside. 

Scripture tells us “do not be afraid”, so remind yourself of theis and these other simple Bible verses to overcome your fear:

1. The Lord is with me; I will not be afraid. (Psalm 118:6)
2. I sought the Lord, and He answered me; He delivered me from all my fears. (Psalm 34:4)
3. God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. (Psalm 46:1)
4. The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? (Psalm 27:1)
5. Cast all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you. (1 Peter 5:7)

Scripture reminds us that we do not need to carry our fears alone, and that God is always with us and will accept our anxieties. No amount of fear or anxiety is too much for him to be burdened with, for He loves us. He will always hear our prayers, even if it’s short and said when were scared or feeling low.
